GreenSketch estimates how shading affects solar energy production based on the panel layout, modeled obstacles, and the sun’s position throughout the year. The estimated impact is included in the energy production figures shown in the design and proposal.
Enable shading calculations
Open Shade and turn on Shade Loss. Add and adjust obstacles, such as trees, to reflect their location and size at the site.
The calculation uses obstacles added to the design. Trees and other features visible in the map imagery are not automatically included.
Update the results
After editing panels, click Calculate to update energy production, including shading impact.
The calculation also runs automatically when leaving the Panel page, including when switching to another sidebar section, Quote, or Proposal. Once complete, the updated results appear in the design and proposal.
FAQ
1. Why is a loss shown even when no trees have been added?
The calculation also accounts for sunlight conditions around sunrise and sunset, when the sun is close to the horizon. The way these periods are represented in the model can produce an estimated loss even without added obstacles. This does not necessarily indicate shading from trees or other objects.
2. Is it necessary to deduct shading losses from the production figures?
Shading losses are already included once the calculation is complete. No additional deduction is needed.
3. How accurate are the estimates?
The estimates depend on the accuracy of the panel layout and modelled obstacles. Actual production may vary with weather, site conditions, and changes to surrounding vegetation.
